Descendants of James Yoes
Generation One
1. James1 Yoes. James was born circa 1765. His grandson said he was born in Germany. His son Coonrod said he was born in Germany or Georgia. He married (?????) James. No documentation has been found for this marriage.
A short biography was written about his grandson Jacob YOES of Crawford County, Arkansas. It said Jacob's grandfather came from Germany and located in Virginia where Jacob's father was born in 1804. No record of them in Virginia has been found.
There may have been more than one James YOES. Or James spent time in North Carolina and South Carolina. In 1794 there was a James YOE who served as a juror in Marlborough County, South Carolina. This had been part of Cheraw District. In 1795 James was involved in a law suit in Marlborough County.
He was a soldier in the North Carolina Continental line. According to correspondence from Watt SAUNDERS, James moved to Tennessee in 1797 to claim his land on Brush Creek he received by revolutionary warrant #4430. James was granted 274 acres on Brush Creek in Robertson County. Early Robertson County Court Minutes (1796?1807) show many references to a John YOES and a Nathan YOES. No reference was made to a James YOES.
A source giving no date, said John and James YOWS, from North Carolina, lived on Brush Creek in Robertson County, Tennessee.
In the 1790 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Cheraw District, South Carolina. It showed:
1 male over 16 (James)
1 male under 16 (Jacob)
2 females (wife and unknown daughter?)
1 slave
Living in the same district were Jesse JAMES and Enos JAMES. One of these could have been the father of the wife of James YOES. There were many other JAMES' in the state.
In 1798 Cheraw was split into Chesterfield, Darlington and Marlborough.
James was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Abbeville County, South Carolina. The official date for this census was 4 August 1800. (James EWES, page 20)
1 male under 10 (William Conrad? He may not have been born at this time.)
1 male between 16 and 26 (Dedrick)
1 male between 26 and 45 (James)
1 female under 10 (who?)
1 female between 10 and 16 (who?)
1 female between 26 and 45 (wife).
James was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census in Abbeville County, South Carolina. The official date for this census was 6 August 1810. (James YEWS, page 41)
2 males under 10 (William Conrad and unknown?)
1 male 10?16 (Dedrick?)
1 male 45+ (James)
1 female ?10
1 female 10?16
1 female 16?26
1 female 26?45 (wife).
Children of James1 Yoes and (?????) James were as follows:
+ 2 i. Jacob2 Yoes, born circa 1790 in North Carolina; married Mary (?????).
3 ii. Dedrick Yoes. Dedrick was born circa 1795. He married Deborah Moore in 1815 in Kentucky.
I have no proof he was the son of James. He may be the Deadrick YOUS in Cole County, Missouri in 1830.
+ 4 iii. William Conrad Yoes, born circa 1804 in Tennessee; married Kissiah Bloyed; married Wilsie House.
Generation Two
2. Jacob2 Yoes (James1). Jacob was born circa 1790 in North Carolina. He married Mary (?????) circa 1817. Jacob died after 1850.
Is this father of our James YOWS? There is no real proof.
According to census reports, the two oldest children of Jacob and Mary were born in Missouri. Their next two children reported their birth places as Arkansas.
Family stories say that the father of James YOWS went to Missouri with Daniel BOONE. Jacob registered to pay taxes in 1817. They moved to Arkansas by January of 1824.
A census listed Jacob as head of household in 1829 in Washington County, Arkansas. He was listed in Richland Township on page seven.
Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Washington County, Arkansas. The official date for this census was 1 June 1830. It showed:
1 male under 5 (Enos)
2 males between 5 and 10 (James and Dederick)
1 male between 30 and 40 (Jacob)
1 female under 5 (unknown daughter)
2 females between 10 and 15 (Mary and Betty),
1 female between 30 and 40 (wife Mary).
Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Washington County, Arkansas. The official date for this census was 1 June 1840. (p 281) It showed they lived in Prairie Township:
1 male 5?10 (son Jacob)
1 male 10?15 (son Enos)
2 male 15?20 (sons James and Dederick)
1 male 50?60 (father Jacob)
1 female 10?15 (daughter Mary)
1 female 50?60 (wife Mary)
2 slaves, 4 in agriculture.
He and Mary (?????) appeared on the census of 1850 in Washington County, Arkansas, (West Fork Township, dwelling 75)
Jacob EWES age 60, born North Carolina
Mary age 62, born Virginia
James SMITH age 18, born Alabama Cherokee Nation.
Children of Jacob2 Yoes and Mary (?????) were as follows:
+ 5 i. Elizabeth3 Yoes, born 18 Jan 1818 in Booneville, Howard County, Missouri; married Joseph Skeen.
6 ii. Mary Yoes. Mary was born on 15 Jan 1822 in Booneville, Howard County, Missouri. She married John Skeen, son of Jacob Skeen and Nancy Yardley, circa 1836 in Arkansas. Mary died circa 1852 on the bank of the Boise River in Idaho. They were part of a wagon train from Washington County, Arkansas, that went through the northern part of California and into Oregon.
+ 7 iii. James E Yows, born 15 Jan 1822 in Booneville, Howard County, Missouri; married Elizabeth Miller.
+ 8 iv. Dederick Yoes, born 14 Jan 1824 in Arkansas; married Elizabeth Mankins.
+ 9 v. Enos Yows, born circa 1826 in Arkansas; married Edith (?????).
10 vi. Jacob Yoes. Jacob was born on 19 Dec 1831 in Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas. He married Sarah P Reed, daughter of William D Reed and Sarah Alexander, on 17 Jan 1850 in Washington County, Arkansas. A copy of their marriage certificate is in my possession. This information in this certificate has several problems. The bride is called Mary REED, when it should have been Sarah. It gave Jacob's age as 18 and Mary's as 17. Actually Sarah would have been twelve years old at this time, if her birth date is correct. They had the consent of their parents. They were married by James B MCNEILL, minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Red died on 6 Sep 1908 at age 76. His body was interred in Campbell Cemetery in Washington County, Arkansas.
His common name was Red.
In the Census of 1850, Jacob was listed as a head of household in Washington County, Arkansas. The official date for this census was 1 June 1850. (West Fork Township, dwelling 76)
Jacob EWES age 19, born Arkansas
S P age 18, born Arkansas.
They had married within the year and lived next door to Jacob's parents, Jacob and Mary.
Jacob was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Washington County, Arkansas. The official date for this census was 1 June 1870. (page 266, dwelling 121, family 121, West Fork Township)
Jacob age 39, farmer, real estate $1,000, personal property $825, born Arkansas
S P age 37, born Arkansas
William age 19, born Arkansas
Abby age 17, born Arkansas
James age 14, born Arkansas
Sarah age 7, born Arkansas
Jacob age 1, born Arkansas
(Living nearby was G E SMEDLEY.).
4. William Conrad2 Yoes (James1). William was born circa 1804 in Tennessee. It has not been proven beyond a doubt that he was a son of James. There is a problem with Conrad's birth date. In 1850 he said he was age 46. In 1870 he was age 65. In 1880 he was 74. This would make him born about 1804. His obituary in 1891 said Conrad was 93 years old. This would make his birth date about 1798. All three censuses gave his birth place as Tennessee.
He was known as Coonrod. It is said he was nicknamed this because he "cooned" it across White River on a log. A short biography of his son Jacob says Conrad was born in Virginia in 1804.
He married Kissiah Bloyed, daughter of Eli Bloyed and Mary Graham, circa 1829. He married Wilsie House on 25 Apr 1847 in Washington County, Arkansas. A copy of their marriage record is in my possession. Conrod was about 40 years of age and Wilcy was about 33 years of age. Both were of West Fork Township of Washington County.
William died on 26 Oct 1891 in Mountainburg, Washington County, Arkansas. His obituary appeared in the Washington County Review on 5 November 1891:
Mr C YOES died at the residence of his grandson, Mr Jim YOES, in Crawford County recently in his 90th year. He was a well and highly respected citizen. For many years he was engaged in the ministry of the Methodist church. Several years ago he was stricken with paralysis and never recovered his strength. He was the father of Col Jacob YOES, U S Marshal. The deceased reached a ripe old age after living a useful and worthy life..
He was a minister in the Methodist Church. The biography of his son Jacob, says Jacob was the "oldest but one of a family of six children" born to Conrad and Kizey. This does not match my arrangement of the children.
He was also known as Rev William Conrad Yoes. A census listed William as head of household in 1829 in Washington County, Arkansas. He was listed in Richland Township.
William was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Washington County, Arkansas. The official date for this census was 1 June 1830. It showed 1 male between 20 and 30 and 1 female between 15 and 20.
William was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Washington County, Arkansas. The official date for this census was 1 June 1840. It showed 1 male under 5, 1 male between 30 and 40, and no females. Where were Kissiah and the four girls?
In the Census of 1850, William was listed as a head of household in Washington County, Arkansas. The official date for this census was 1 June 1850. They lived in West Fork Township.

YOES, Coonrod, age 74, farmer, born Tennessee, parents born Ger?\Geo?
Wilsey, age 67, wife, born North Carolina, parents born North Carolina.
Children of William Conrad2 Yoes and Kissiah Bloyed were as follows:
11 i. Mary Ann3 Yoes. Mary was born on 29 Jul 1830. She married Wilson M Tigard on 17 Mar 1850. A copy of their marriage record is in my possession. Wilson was age 23 and Mary Ann was age 20.
On 13 November 1852 Wilson and Mary wrote a letter to her grandparents, Eli and Mary BLOYED in Washington County, Arkansas. Wilson and Mary were writing about the hardships and deaths during their move to Oregon. They settled ten miles from Portland, ten miles from Oregon City and seven miles west of Milwaukie. Mary died on 6 Feb 1899 in Tigard, Washington County, Oregon, at age 68. Her body was interred in Tigard, Washington County, Oregon.

18 ii. Sarah Ann Matilda Yows. Sarah was born in 1849 in Winslow, Washington County, Arkansas. She married Marion Columbus Burrows on 19 Sep 1869 in Winslow, Washington County, Arkansas. Her common name was Tillie.
Generation Three
5. Elizabeth3 Yoes (Jacob2, James1). Elizabeth was born on 18 Jan 1818 in Booneville, Howard County, Missouri. She married Joseph Skeen, son of Jacob Skeen and Nancy Yardley. Elizabeth died on 4 Feb 1891 in Yreka, Siskiyou County, California, at age 73. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka, Siskiyou County, California. Her common name was Betty.
Betty went to California with three of her siblings and other friends and family during the gold rush. They went by wagon train over the old Oregon Trail from St Joseph, Missouri to a point in Idaho, there over the California Trail. They remained in Yreka, California, while many in their party went on to Oregon. They suffered many hardships along the way and many in their party died. There is some question about whether or not Joseph survived the 1852 trip. Betty had two children born after arriving in California, so it appears Joseph lived a few more years. Yreka is in the north part of California, near the Oregon border.
This relationship is proven by e?mails from Gerry MILHORN in August 2000. Gerry says there is a probate record for Jacob YOES, father of Betty. She sold her share of the estate to her oldest son Jacob and in 1860 she sold the land to Jones PEERSON. Jacob was living in Texas as that time. Also the death certificate of Betty's daughter states her father as Joseph SKEEN and her mother's maiden name was YOES. Gerry says a cousin California has this proof.
Children of Elizabeth3 Yoes and Joseph Skeen were:
19 i. Elizabeth4 Skeen , , was born on 6 Oct 1849 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. She married Caswell L Murray. She died on 21 Jul 1920 in Yreka, Siskiyou County, California, at age 70 of acute Peracarditis.
7. James E3 Yows (Jacob2 Yoes, James1). James was born on 15 Jan 1822 in Booneville, Howard County, Missouri. He married Elizabeth Miller, daughter of John B(enton?) Miller and Mary Roberts, on 24 Apr 1844. James died on 12 Dec 1898 in Hay Valley, Coryell County, Texas, at age 76. The cause of death was pneumonia. His body was interred in Ater Cemetery in Coryell County, Texas, on 13 Dec 1898.
According to family tradition, James went to California to the gold rush leaving his wife at home. His brother Enos went along and died in California. On the trip overland they had to pay 75 cents for bear meat and one dollar a pound for pork. His sisters Mary and Bettie followed him. Mary died on the plains and Bettie made her home in California. James' wife sold the property in Arkansas while he was in California and went from Arkansas to Lockhart, Texas, to meet him. He sailed from Frisco to Panama, rode a mule over the isthmus, caught a boat to Galveston, then rode ox wagons to Lockhart. The Captain on board his ship starved the men until they mutinied and took over the ship's stores. The ship officers were cowed and afraid to say anything. It took the ship forty days to sail from Frisco to Panama.
After meeting up with his wife, the family moved to Williamson County. James made seven trips back to Arkansas by wagon and horseback before deciding to settle down five miles west of Georgetown. James YOWS' wife, in addition to being an excellent housekeeper and lover of home life, was a remarkably intelligent woman who read widely and had an unusually good memory for what she read.
James was involved in several land transactions in Williamson County, Texas as early as October 1854.
In April 1999, according to Allie Ruth HILES, James YOWS' family Bible was in possession of George RICKETTS in Dumas, Texas.
In Liberty Hill Cemetery on the highway between Liberty Hill and Burnet is a small grave with a marker reading J N YOWS. Next to it is another small grave marked W & R SMEDLEY.
He appeared on the census of 1860 in Williamson County, Texas, (page 299, family 528, Georgetown)

She lived in West Fork Township. Dederick died in Nov 1861 in near Waco, McLennan County, Texas, at age 37. His body was interred in Waco, McLennan County, Texas.
We have no proof that this Dedrick was the one who was the son of Jacob and Mary.
When the twins were fourteen months old, the YOES family moved to Texas by covered wagon. When they arrived in Waco, Dedrick YOES died. The rest of the family went on to San Gabriel, Texas, then on to somewhere in east Texas. They then moved to Jonah in Williamson County where Elizabeth married again. This information was contributed by Hazel HOOD in 1997.

A letter was written on this date by the TIGARD family to Eli and Mary BLOYED. They had recently had a very difficult trip from Arkansas to Oregon with many other friends and family. The letter told of the hardships of the trip and listed the people who had not survived. Among them was Uncle Enos.
On 30 December 1859 an issue of The Arkansian shows Probate Court records that Jones PEERSON was to be guardian of the heirs of Enos YOES, deceased.
Goodspeed's says he married Abigail, daughter of William D REED and Sarah ALEXANDER.
Children of Enos3 Yows and Edith (?????) all born in Arkansas were as follows:

In 1850, when she was sixteen years old, Cynthia was listed twice in the census. She was enumerated with her father and with Joel and Pernitta COMBS. Maybe they hired her, or maybe Pernitta was a relative.
Children of Cynthia3 Yoes and Jefferson Quinton were:
42 i. Alfred R4 Quinton was born circa 1855 in Arkansas.
Alfred was listed as Jefferson Quinton's son in the (p 642C, E D 212, 8 June, Crawford Township, house 133, family 133)

He married Mary Ann Reed, daughter of William D Reed and Sarah Alexander, on 26 Dec 1858 in Washington County, Arkansas. Big Jake died on 6 Feb 1906 at age 66. His body was interred in Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
Goodspeed's says Jacob was the second of six children born to Conrad and Kizey YOES. Other information shows a different order of birth.
According to family tradition, Big Jake tried to stay out of the Civil War as long as he could. However, his father Coonrod was badly mistreated by Southern soldiers when he was taken prisoner. A neighbor, Pete MANKIN, was very friendly with Coonrod's captors. Big Jake was forced into action. He caught Pete MANKIN and told his father's captors that he would kill Pete unless his father was turned loose.
He farmed until June 1862 and then enlisted in Company D, First Arkansas Cavalry, United States Army. Jacob was on detached duty most of the time, and the only battle he in which he participated was at Prairie Grove. In May of 1863 he was fired on by a posse of Confederates. He took shots in both hips and in his left leg, breaking his leg. Jacob was taken prisoner to Van Buren, a distance of fifty miles, and held until exchanged in August, after which he served until the close of the war. He was commissioned first lieutenant, but would not accept. Jacob was discharged at Fayetteville in August 1865.
In 1869 Jacob filed a Pension Application for his service in the Union forces.
The John WAYNE movie Big Jake was based on Jake. He was also known as Black Jake. In 1870 he opened a country store twenty?five miles south of Fayetteville, Arkansas. In West Fork, he had a store, flour mill, hotel, and controlling interest in a canning factory. He had a large store and a hotel in Chester. Jake had a store in Mountainburg and had smaller stores in Woolsey, Walker Switch and Graphic. He was sheriff of Crawford County and was Deputy Marshal under `Hanging Judge' Isaac PARKER. Jake was a Republican, a Mason and a Senator. (Joyce MOODY sent me this information.)
Marshal YOES and U S Jailer PAPE learned of plans of the Dalton gang to attempt the robbery of a bank at Coffeyville, Kansas and set a trap.
