James Yoes, 1796
A James Yoes received Revolutionary Warrant No. 4430 for 274 acres of land in Tennessee, issued Dec. 22, 1796. It was issued from North Carolina. He was a private in the Continental Line of North Carolina. However, Tennessee didn't become a state until 1796, and prior to that time, the land was claimed as part of North Carolina. Tennessee may still have honored the warrant. He is possible that James Yoes may have sold this warrant and never lived in Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Archivist. They could find no other record on James Yoes in the Tennessee Department of Archives.
In the book Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution, no Yoes was listed. But because some of the land records in Spartanburg, South Carolina referred to Nathan or John as both Yew and Yaos besides Yoes, I looked up any Revolutionary War soldiers with those names in North Carolina. There was one listing for a James Yew. James Yew was a private in the Continental from the Hillsboro District. The only Hillsborough in North Carolina today is just outside of Durham.
